RYB

After the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police, the good folk at itch.io created the “Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality” in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement. 1,741 items from 1,391 creators were included in this bundle. This column not only serves to highlight those games, projects and other items from these generous creators, but is also a reminder that Black Lives do, and always will, Matter.

The selfish, dishonourable, racist fascist, who ruled over America from 2017 - 2020, may have been voted out, but this is only the first of many, many steps to come toward true justice. The fight does not stop until we can stand by each other, shoulder to shoulder, truly and honestly, equal.

RYB - $5

In what appears to be a pretty simple colour based puzzle game at first, RYB really blooms out to become a true mind bender the further down the road you go.

Bringing to mind The Witness at times, RYB is the type of puzzle game where sure, you can brute force it - but learning the rules of this puzzle game is absolutely paramount. The further you get in, the more each rule builds on one other, creating some real head scratchers.

It’s minimalist aesthetic and bolt palate may project simplicity, but this is by far one of those puzzle games with an upward trajectory in difficulty. Along with the aforementioned The Witness, RYB brings to mind some of the time I spent with Baba Is You last year - not necessarily in puzzle design per sae, but in that feeling of staring at the screen for minutes at a time, doing nothing but tick over the possibilities and combinations of potential solutions in my mind. There’s only ever a single solution here however.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t finished RYB yet - I don’t even know if I can. It is however incredibly compelling, and I’m going to continue diving into it for some time.

You can find RYB on itch.io.
