Alt Games Of The Year - Get -Immersed-
Embodying a character in first person, at least for me, has this unbeatable quality of really putting you into the perspective of another. Sometimes its as a blank slate, where you get the choice to create a whole new you; other times its to make digitally literal the saying, “walk a mile in my shoes”.
Best First Person Adventure
(AKA Walking Simulator But That’s A Loaded Term And We Go Back And Forth On Whether It’s Been “Reclaimed” Or Not, I Like First Person Adventure As A Term But Also Walking Simulator Is Good Too)
Nominees:
One Last Memory
Lost At Sea
Forgotten Hope
Adios
Through The Fragmentation
Was It Worth It?
Hypnagogia 無限の夢 Boundless Dreams
Winner: Through The Fragmentation
A strange game that immediately has you asking questions. Excellent atmosphere. Through The Fragmentation is one of those “just go play it, don’t even think about it too much” type of experiences.
Best First Person Perspective Art Game
Moving around in a 3D space is the perfect destination for an art exhibit, especially when the game itself is that exhibit. Differentiated from “regular” first person adventure games by their more avant-garde approach.
Nominees:
Winner: Mango
Mango’s surrealist art-scapes are truly something. An unnerving fascination with mouths. Watch as a mind crumbles before your eyes.
Best First Person Mystery
Puzzling out the how’s and the why’s of a space… it’s hard to do right, and there’s only a handful of games that have pulled it off. Thankfully, that doesn’t stop people from trying - and succeeding.
Nominees:
The Forgotten City
Paradise Lost
The Long Gate
Faraday Protocol
Winner: The Forgotten City
From beloved Skyrim mod to fully remade, breakout success, The Forgotten City does not only do a wonderful job at being a great mystery, but also impresses with its historical accuracy. The facts I mean, not necessarily the people turning into golden statues.
